William Lithgow was born in Scotland in 1784 and educated at the University of Edinburgh, graduating as a Licentiate of the Church of Scotland. William Lithgow was the Auditor General of the colony of New South Wales in Australia.
Obituary
William Lithgow, who expired at his residence at St. Leonards, on Saturday evening last. He was born in Scotland in 1784, and was consequently at the time of his death in his eightieth year. When a young man he studied for the Church, matriculated at the University of Edinburgh, and passed as a Licentiate of the Church of Scotland. Shortly afterwards he joined, in the capacity of tutor, the family of the late Deputy Commissary-General Allan (father of Mr. G. O. Allan, of the Savings Bank, in Sydney), and proceeded with them to the island of Heligoland, where he remained until Mr. Allan, sen., was ordered to take oharge of the Commissariat Department in this colony, when he obtained for Mr. Lithgow an appointment in the same service. About the year 1811 Mr. Lithgow was ordered to the Mauritius, where he remained until he was removed to this colony about the year 1820. To the time of his death he held the rank and drew the half-pay allowance of an Assistant Commissary-General. About the year 1824 Mr. Lithgow was appointed Auditor of Colonial Accounts. He also held the offices of Prlvate Secretary to Governor Darling, and Clerk of the Executive Council during the absence of Colonel Dumaresq. He was an official member of the first Legislative Council, and resigned the office of Auditor-General in 1852, and ceased from that time to hold any public appointment. Mr. Lithgow aocumulated a considerable amount of property, and has left some liberal bequests to the public charities and to other colonial institutions. The funeral of the deceased gentleman will take place at St. Leonards, at three o'clock, this afternoon.
The city of Lithgow in New South Wales was named in honour of William Lithgow by his friend, Surveyor-General John Oxley.
