The death is announced of Colonel William Leslie Davidson, C.B., Royal Artillery, Gentleman Usher to the King, who died of heart failure at Rouen on August 3, while on active service. Colonel Davidson, who was 65 years of age, was the second son of the late Patrick Davidson, LL.D., of Inchmarlo, and entered the army in 1869, obtaining his colonelcy in 1900. In 1875-7 he was A.D.C. to the Commander-in-Chief, India, and in 1881-2 to the Governor of Gibraltar.
Colonel Davidson was wounded in the Zulu campaign, 1879, and was mentioned in dispatches. He saw active service again in the Afghan War, 1880, and in the South African War, when he was colonel on the Staff for Royal Artillery. He was present at the relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, Dreifontein, and Karee Siding; and for his services, which were mentioned in dispatches, was made a C.B. In 1913 he was appointed Gentleman Usher to the King.
Colonel Davidson, who married, in 1887, Lady Theodora Keppel, and leaves two sons and four daughters, was a convert to the Church.
