William Hunter Reynolds was born 1 May 1822 in Chatham, Kent, England, United Kingdom and died 1 April 1899 Montecillo, Mornington, Dunedin, Otago Region, New Zealand of unspecified causes. He married Rachel Selina Pinkerton (1838-1928) 7 October 1856 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.
His childhood was spent in Oporto, Portugal but he was educated in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1850 along with his parents, brother-in-law (James MacAndrew), sister (Eliza Hunter (Reynolds) MacAndrew) and other relatives, he emigrated to New Zealand on board the Titan which they had purchased and stocked with necessary supplies for New Zealand. He became the Otago Immigration Agent making several trips to Melbourne, Australia and England to recruit immigrants. He was involved with local politics from 1853-1876. He is remembered for his significant contribution over 47 years to the establishment and development of the Otago region.
