William became one of Timaru's most honoured citizens in his capacity as a doctor.
Unwin Lodge is an alpine hut named after Dr Unwin, who was a notable mountaineer in his spare time. It "is the flagship of the NZAC hut network. The lodge was rebuilt in 2012 and sits at the entrance to Aoraki Mt Cook National Park."
