Thomas Jose was born 1819 in Penwartha, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom to Thomas Jose (1782-1849) and Ann Pill (1791-1858) and died 18 September 1898 at Chelastan Farm in Edwardstown, South Australia, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Mary Ann Mitchell (1821-1899) 6 September 1846 . Ancestors are from the United Kingdom.

He arrived in South Australia on 3 July 1847 on the Belle Alliance with his wife (and his brother Henry?).

In 1853 he bought land which had been part of Hiram Manfull's "Chellaston Grove Farm". From the almond trees he planted he developed the varieties "B1", "B2" and "Chellaston".
