Biography[edit | edit source]

Thomas Hyde Fentiman was born in 1756 in London to William Fentiman (c1709-1796), a carpenter and Sarah Hyde (c1714-1783). His name was a necronym, his older brother died in infancy.

In 1795 Thomas married Ann Loat. This may be the same woman as Ann Usher (1769-1871), by whom he had an illegitemate daughter Patience Usher (1805-1873). He was named as the father in a poor law investigation during 1805.

In 1804, Thomas Fentiman, gent. of Southwark was to be Cornet with the Southwark Yeoman Cavalry. (*)

In October 1805 Thomas Fentiman and Lancelot Loat mutually dissolved their partnership.

In 1813 Thomas Fentiman, Esq. became Paymaster of the Cavalry Staff Corps. (*)

In 1816 Thomas married Mary Loat, probably a relative of his first wife and also of his niece's husband, Lancelot Loat (c1770-1840) who was his business partner until 1805.

Thomas left his home in Rotherhithe to his nephew Thomas Fentiman (1778-1826) who lived in the West Indies as an ordnance shopkeeper. (*) may refer to this nephew.
