Biography

Theodore Lyman Eliot, Jr. (born 1928 into Boston's Eliot family) was the United States Ambassador to Afghanistan from 1973 to 1978. He is a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy.

Eliot graduated from Harvard College in 1948 and received a Master of Public Administration from Harvard's Graduate School of Public Administration in 1956.

State department country director for Iran in 1969.

He also served as Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and as Secretary General for the United States of the Bilderberg Meetings from 1981 to October 1993.

Nephew of Thomas H. Eliot and Samuel Atkins Eliot Jr, great-grandson of Charles William Eliot, great-great grandson of Samuel Atkins Eliot. Charles Eliot, the landscape architect, was his great-uncle.
