Susanna Boylston Adams Hall (1708-1797)
A prominent early-American socialite, mother of the second U.S. President, John Adams and grandmother of the sixth President, John Quincy Adams.
She married John Adams, Sr. in 1734. She is among the least well known of the famous Adams family, for her name appears infrequently in the large body of Adams writings. However, her son's diary reveals that she had a fiery temper.
Five years after the death of her first husband, she married Lt. John Hall, who apparently did not get along with her grown children. She died in the first year of her son's presidency.
Adams married well, to Susanna Boylston, from a prominent family of scientists and medical doctors, in October 1734. His socialite bride came from the wealthy and respected line of Bolystons of Brookline. Susanna had a "higher social standing than" him. When their first son went to Harvard, his class rank was determined primarily by his mother's socio-economic status. Since it is known that he and his sons read out letters to her, Susanna might have been illiterate, as were many women of her class and day.
