Steffan Barca (1860-before1900) of Norway

Birth[]

He was born in 1860 and may have been from Stavanger, Rogaland, Norway. He should appear in the 1865 Norway Census but without his death certificate, the name of his parents are unknown. Barca may have been the farm name in Norway.

Emigration[]

He arrived in the United States around 1881. He doesn't appear in the 1800 United States Census and was married in 1883.

Marriage[]

Steffan married Johanna Katrine Jensen (1857-1912) aka Katharina Jensen, on September 03, 1883 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was listed as "Steffen Barca" and she was listed as "Katrine Jensen".

Children[]

Together they had the following children:

  • Henry Barca (1886-1961) aka Stephen Hainer Barca, who was born on August 18, 1886 and married Zelma Emmeline Aldrich (1889-1919) on April 10, 1907. Henry died on December 8, 1961 under the name Stephen Parker in Saint Louis, Missouri. Steffan was not the biological father of Henry, she got impregnated by another man three years into their marriage.
  • Leopold Barca (1887-1924) who was born on December 13, 1887 and died on September 16, 1924.

Death[]

He died around 1895 most likely in Chicago, but he does not appear in the Illinois death index. She appears as a widow in the 1896 city directory.

He was buried in Mount Olive Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois.

Widow[]

His widow appears in the 1900 US Census under the name "Barcon", living in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Katrine raised Osborne Theomun Olsen (1883-1971) and his siblings. Katrine died on July 02, 1912, under the name "Katharina Barca".

Other Barcas[]

Eva Barca (1896) who died on February 16, 1896 after living for 15 days. Theresa Barca (1874-1892), who died on April 26, 1892 at age 18. All died in Chicago.

Relationship[]

Steffan was the grandfather of Bette Parker Patten (1941- ). He was also the uncle of Osborne Titaman Olsen (1883-1971).

Find his birth in Norway. His death certificate needs to be found first to find the name of his parents. Call Mount Olive Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois and find out if any people are buried under the name "Barca". This may lead to him and his wife. The cemetery says he is not buried there.
