Biography
Samuel Spalding was born 31 January 1727 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States to Henry Spalding (1704-1792) and Lucy Proctor (1708-1742) and died 11 September 1797 Merrimack, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Woods (1730-1815) 17 March 1753 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States.
Lieutenant in General Washington's army at the Battle of White Plains
As a young man he acquired possession of a large tract of wild land in Merrimack, NH, of which town he was one of the first settlers, erecting a house and clearing quite a large tract prior to going there. His original farm was situated northwest of Hetacock Pond. This estate embraced a large area which was divided into forms and distributed among his sons. He was large of statue, possessed unusual strength and powerful voice which could be heard distinctly for a distance of two miles.
Early in the revolutionary war he entered the Continental army as a lieutenant, serving under General Washington at the Battle of White Plains, New York, Oct 28, 1776. He was honorably discharged in December of that year.
His wife, Sarah Woods, was born Mar 8, 1730 in Chelmsford, daughter of Samuel Woods and Mary Parker of that town. She survived her husband, and died of spotted fever at the age of 85 years on Apr 10, 1815.
He was one of the first settlers of Merrimack, N.H., where he owned a large tract of land, from which he gave farms to several of his sons. He came up from Chelmsford, Mass., and cleared a piece of land and built a house, before he married. He was a man of rather more than medium size, both in height and breadth, and had a very strong voice. It is said that it could be distinctly heard at a distance of two miles. He was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, and was in the battle of White Plains, 28 Oct 1776; he received his discharge in December of the same year.
