Biography

Samuel Bate was born 1776 in Wych Street, London, Greater London, England, United Kingdom to Samuel Bate (1743-1814) and died 22 November 1849 Dapto, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Adams (bef1804-) 28 November 1804 . He married Matilda King (c1787-1869) 19 September 1810 in St Davids, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

The obituary of his son Henry Jefferson Bate (1816-1892) incudes the following account of his life:

[...] Samuel Bate who came out in the year 1804, one of the civil officers in connection with the first batch of convicts sent to Tasmania. He returned to England in 1816 in the ship Jefferson, and on that voyage his son, the late Henry Jefferson Bate was born. The family did not, however, remain long in England, as soon afterwards Dr. Samuel Bate was appointed Inspector of Distilleries for New South Wales, and on arrival took up his residence at Middle Harbor
