CAROLA M. BELL 1950-2015 Carola Bell, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to many, died August 6, 2015 after a brief illness. She slipped away with peace and grace at her sister's house in Maine, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Havre-de-Grace, Maryland on June 14, 1950 and grew up in Annapolis, MD and Danby, VT. In 1967, she moved with her family to Santa Fe NM, where the people and landscape sustained and enriched her for the rest of her life. Carola was a writer, an artist, and an introspective thinker, who loved poetry, Nature, and late night discussions on life's fundamental mysteries. She was a spiritual seeker, possessing an inner peace, optimism, and humor that kept her buoyant and inspired those who knew her. She began to paint in 2003, and her work was immediately stunning in color and design. Her oil paintings and collages remain as testament to her vibrant soul and vision. Carola is survived by her dear children: Taj Birnbaum of Santa Fe, Rachel Sumers of NYC, and Jimi Malone of Santa Fe. She also leaves her daughter-in-law Karen Aguilar Mendez, grandsons Ades Aguilar Mendez and Dimitri Birnbaum of Santa Fe, and her four sisters, Sandy Colt of Maine, Nona Estrin and Delia Robinson of Vermont and Charlotte Samuels of California. She now joins her beloved parents, Charles and Diana Bell. The Heaven's gain is our great loss. With clear melting dew, I'd try to wash away the dust of this floating world. Dr. Merrell Middlemore By Ernest Jones Dr. Middlemore died suddenly on November 15, 1938, the day of her return from a convalescence in the country. She had long suffered from ill-health and this prevented her from playing the active part in psycho-analytical work that would have been commensurate with her talents. In a quiet way she was a valued contributor to the work of the British Society. The charm of her personality, however, and the high merit of her intelligence were fully revealed only to a small circle to whom she greatly endeared herself. She had of late devoted herself with great interest to making a specially direct study of the subtleties of breast feeding and had developed here a remarkable technique for dealing with mothers, nurses and infants in the way that would yield the least disturbing results. Some of her observations were reported in a paper read before the British Society on November 3, 1937. It is hoped that an amplified record of them will shortly appear in book form.  +
