The Principality of Kostroma was an appanage principality in Northeastern Rus', with the center in the city of Kostroma. It existed from 1246 to 1304.
History It separated from the Grand Principality of Vladimir-Suzdal around 1246, when it staarted to be ruled by Vasili Yaroslavovich, son of the Grand Prince of Vladimir-Suzdal Yaroslav Vsevolodovich.
When Vasili Yaroslavovich died without heirs in 1277, the territory of the principality was returned to the Grand Principality of Vladimir-Suzdal. Then, the Grand Prince of Vladimir-Suzdal Dmitri Aleksandrovich ceded the lands of the Principality of Kostroma to his brother Andrei Aleksandrovich, who in turn transferred it to his nephew Ivan Dmitrievich. However, Ivan Dmitrievich soon received the Principality of Pereyaslavl-Zalessky, and the Principality of Kostroma was returned to Andrei Aleksandrovich of Gorodets (c1255-1304), who, in 1299, he transferred property to his son Boris Andreyevich, who was just over one year old.
After the death of the latter in 1303, Boris Danilovich, the son of Daniil of Moscow, became prince of Kostroma in 1304. Through this transfer, the relative independence of the Principality of Kostroma] ended, and it became part of the lands of the princely house of Moscow.
