Pieternelletje Bergman was born on 23 April 1810 in Delft, South Holland. She was the illegitimate daughter of Cornelia Bergman (c1781-1855) and Dirk van der Tolen (1782-1836). Her parents were either never together or together for a brief period, as both married to different people when Pieternelletje was young. She grew up with her mother, who later married a German tailor, Frans Lefarth (1780-1836). Cornelia's mother Maria van Zevet (c1740-1816) also lived with them. Cornelia and Frans had Hendrik, Marijtje, Anna Maria and Pieter.
Pieternelletje seemingly didn't know her father or even who he was, as he is not mentioned on her marriage or death certificates.
On 7 March 1845 in Ter Aar, Pieternelletje married Machiel Hogendoorn (1812-1865). Machiel was born in Nieuwkoop, and moved to Ter Aar after a time in Oudewater. At the time of the marriage, Machiel was a labourer and Pieternelletje was a cleaner. They were married for fifteen years and had five children, including a stillborn son and a son who died in infancy. The family moved to Haarlem in about 1846.
