Paul Petit left France with his father Alexis Petit, his mother Gabrielle and younger brother Eugène Petit in the wake of the French Revolution of 1830. They first went to Constantinople and then to Odessa, finally settling in Iași, Moldavia around 1840.
He married Elena Gheorghiu, a French teacher, and together they continued managing the French school founded by his parents.
