The family lived in the James Matthews Presbyterian Academy, and had children Lizzie (23 years old), Mary (21 years old), Robert B. (19 years old), Annie (17 years old), and a number of servants and students. One of the students was a Robert S. Forbes (16 years old, born in Indiana), who was probably the same Robert S. Forbes who was the son of Nancy's brother Andrew. Daughter Lizzie was born in Ohio, while Mary, Robert B. and Annie were all born in Kentucky.

Willa John, a Chinese servant, also resided in the household. The census reveals that Lizzie was born in Ohio, while Annie was born in Kentucky.
