May L. Hill was born 27 August 1884 in Mason City, Iowa, United States to Frank Hill (1848-) and Mary Elizabeth Seville (1852-1932) and died 2 October 1969 of unspecified causes. She married Charles Criswell Arbuthnot (1880-) 1932 .

May Hill Arbuthnot (27 August 1884 – 2 October 1969), born May L. Hill, was an American educator, writer, editor, children's literature scholar, lecturer, and an associate professor of education at Western Reserve University. She was the author of a well-known text about children's literature, Children and Books, and of Time for Poetry, Arbuthnot Anthology, Time for Fairy Tales, Time for True Tales, Children's Books Too Good to Miss, Time for Stories Past and Present, Time for Old Magic, and Time for New Magic. She won the 1964 Regina Medal from the Catholic Library Association. On 17 December 1932 she married Charles Criswell Arbuthnot.

The Arbuthnot Prize

May Hill Arbuthnot established the Arbuthnot Prize, an annual award for the best in children's literature. Also described as "a prestigious international award given to recognize lifetime achievement in children's literature" [1]. It is awarded by the International Reading Association.

The Arbuthnot Honor Lecture

The Arbuthnot Honor Lecture is given each year by an author, artist, critic, librarian, historian, or teacher of children's literature. It was established in 1969. The lectureship is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.
