He married Elizabeth Maria Phillipa Morris (1855-1905) 28 July 1875 in Windsor, New South Wales, Australia.

Obituary

DEATH OF MR. MATTHEW STERNBECK.

Millfield was in mourning this week for on Monday one of the most respected residents of the district passed away, after an illness of about a fortnight, in the person of Mr. Matthew Thompson Sternbeck. The late Mr. Sternbeck was very widely known, having resided in the Wollombi district nearly all of his life. He was born on the McDonald River in 1854. He was the son of the late Mr. George Sternbeck, who one of the earliest natives of of Australia having been born at Pittown (Windsor). The late Mr. Sternbeck lived at Wollombi for forty years, then he removed to Millfield, where he resided until his death. The remains of deceased were interred in the Church of England portion of Wollombi cemetery. The cortege being one of the largest ever witnessed in the district. The deceased gentleman took a deep interest in public affairs and he was one of the founders of the Cessnock Co-operative Dairy Co., of which he was a member of the board of directors up to his death. He was prceeded by his wife sixteen years ago. He is survived by a family of six sons and four daughters—Messers. Henry (Inverell), Chris (Murray's Run), Ephriam, Thomas, Robert (Cessnock) and Oliver Sternbeck. The four daughters are Mrs. Bowman (Wyong), Miss Ida, Mrs. Keith Thompson (Laguna) and Miss Veda (Millfield). Two brothers and one sister also survive him. They are Mr. William Matthew Sternbeck (Laguna) and Mr. James Sternbeck (Murray's Run) and the sister is Mrs. Sylvester Butler (Wiseman's Ferry). The Sternbeck family is one of the oldest and best known in the district. The deceased gentleman will be sadly missed from the district, particularly in Millfield.
