Obituary

By the death of Mrs. Gresley, widow of the late Mr. Nigel Gresley, who was for many years connected with the Union Bank of Australia in Victoria and Hobart, one loses a connecting link with the Colonies (writes the British Australasian of March 2nd).

Mrs. Gresley in the seventies was one of the leading hostesses in Tasmania.

She was a gifted musician, the practise of which talent she kept up to within a few days of her death, which occurred on the 19th February, 1911. She lived to the ripe old age of 83, passing away in her sleep at her residence in Knightsbridge. Mrs. Gresley's, daughters are all married and settled in England and India; although all her eleven children were bom in Hobart.

Henrietta, the eldest, married Mr. Harley Bacon, younger son of General and Lady Charlotte Bacon, and grandson of the Earl of Oxford, whose daughter, Gladys Feez, is now the Countess Dupplin, whose son, Lord Hay of Kinfauns, is heir to the Earldom of Kinmoull. Mr. Arthur W. Forde, J.P., who married Florence, the second daughter, was a Dean of the University of Bombay. Mrs. Forde married secondly Captain Ian Turner, 16th (the Queen's) Lancers. Mrs. David Lewis, third daughter, married secondly Mr. Henry Johnson, of Fallowfield. Lancashire. Mrs. Charles Strutt is the widow of a well known Mutiny officer, Major Strutt, who belonged to the Bombay Artilery, and was for twenty four years Equerry-in-Waiting to Her Majesty Queen Victoria, with residence at Windsor Castle. Another daughter married Lieut. Colonel Flemyng Gyll, R H.A., while the youngest daughter married Lord George Loftus, heir to his brother the Marquis of Ely.

Addenda.—Mrs. Nigel Gresley was a daughter of Dr. Abbott, of Hobart, who for many years held an important position under the crown, and who had much to do in the convict settlement in Hobart. She was aunt to our G.M.O., Doctor Charles Thomas Abbott, of Pine Creek, N.T.
