Maniapoto was born on an unknown date to Rereahu and Hineaupounamu .

A highly significant 17th-century leader in New Zealand, based in the Waikato and Waitomo districts, who founded Ngāti Maniapoto, the tribe that bears his name.

His third wife was a daughter of his second wife, who was a great-granddaughter of his older half-brother Te Ihingaarangi.
