Loomis Bishop of Cannonsburg, served in the 21st Michigan Infantry during the Civil War. He entered service as a Lieutenant on July 30,1862. He was promoted to Captain on Feb.3,1863 and Lieutenant Colonel on Sept.20,1863. He was breveted up to a full Colonel, U.S.Volunteers, on March 18,1865. On June 8,1865,he was mustered out and honorably discharged.

He returned to Kent County and was elected Register of Deeds in 1876, 1878, and 1880. He was elected Kent County Sheriff in 1886 and 1888 and was appointed Postmaster by President McKinley.
