He married Mehitable Smith (1655-1684) 1 November 1677 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. He married Bethia Gager (1657-1723) 2 November 1685 in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut.

Joshua Abell was a constable in Dedham, Massachusetts. In 1677 he moved to Norwich, Connecticut and owned 1000 acres there. On 24 Feb. 1720 he gave the West Church Society (Norwich) the lot on which the first Meeting House was erected.
