He married Penelope Thompson (1817-1867) 28 December 1835 in West Bromwich All Saints Church, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England. He married Caroline Griffin (1844-1916) 5 October 1867 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. He married Thoephenia Griffin (1841-1891) 17 May 1873 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.

Joseph Lewis Thompson was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, on 8 February 1815. He was the son of Ann Lewis and Benjamin Thompson. Joseph Lewis Thompson was christened on 27 September 1822 in St. Phillips, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, and given the name Joseph Thompson, but he later adopted his mother's maiden name as a middle name (Lewis) in order to distinguish him from other Joseph Thompsons living near by and to facilitate delivery of mail that was always getting mixed up. Joseph Lewis Thompson worked in England as a silversmith.

On 28 December 1835, he married Penelope Thompson at West Bromwich All Saints, Staffordshire, England. They became the parents of Susannah (1836), William Henry (1838), Eliza Penelope (1840), Joseph Lewis Jr. (1842), Jane Percilla (1845), Ann Penelope (1848), Henry (1850), John (1852), James Godson (1854), Richard Charles (1857), Benjamin Thomas (1859), and Samuel Robert (1861). The family resided in Birmingham until about 1845 when they moved to London.

Joseph Lewis Thompson was baptized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 2 March 1857. Joseph Lewis Thompson then moved to Providence, Rhode Island, in the spring of 1854. Later the family moved to Utah in 1862 where Joseph Lewis Thompson Sr. worked as a farmer after settling in Clarkston, Cache, Utah.

On 5 October 1867, Joseph Lewis Thompson Sr. married Caroline Griffin in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. They became the parents of Walter Lewis (1869), Isaiah Thomas (1870), and George (1872). On 17 May 1873 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Joseph Lewis Thompson Sr. married Theophania Griffin (a sister to Caroline Griffin). They became the parents of Sylvia Lois (1874). Joseph Lewis Thompson Sr. died on 15 February 1875 in Clarkston, Cache, Utah. He was buried on 18 February 1875 in the Clarkston Cemetery.
