Stockton (Maternal grandfather) was a native of VA who removed to Barren county with his parents when he was a mere child and became one of the most prominent physicians and distinguished citizens of his county, serving one term as representative in the legislature, in 1840, and otherwise aiding his people in the capacity of public servant. He died in Barren (now Metcalfe) County in 1870, ages 72 years."
- "HISTORY OF METCALFE COUNTY (KY)"; ... When but 2 years old Joseph B. Stockton, Sr., came with his parents to Barren County, KY., the almost unbroken wilderness. The family settled in Barren Co., in what is now Metcalfe Co., Here Joseph B., Sr., received a good education for that early time. He was reared on a farm but in early life commenced the study of medicine and practiced that profession in connection with farming until about 1848, when he removed to Edmonton, where he engaged in the hotel business, but also continued his practice until his death in 1870. He had been twice married; our subject's (Joseph B., Jr.) mother was his first wife . He and wife were from early life devoted member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in which he was for many years a ruling elder. He was also a member of the Masonic Fraternity, and twice represented Barren Co., in the Lower House of the State Legislature. His father, Robert Stockton, was born in 1743, came to KY in 1799, and was a Revolutionary veteran, as were also both of his brothers, John and Richard, one of whom, Richard Stockton, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and the father of Commodore Stockton, of 1812 fame (*This is error; confused with QM Robert Stockton of NJ. Both served and both taken prisoner). Robert served through the entire struggle of 7 years, and was once taken prisoner by the British .He was one of the early pioneers of Barren County, KY, and was a regularly ordained minister of the Baptist Church for over 50 years. He became one of the largest land owners in the county, owning some 7,000 acres in one body immediately west of Edmonton, and also various other large tracts of land and large numbers of negroes. His death occurred in Barren County, KY in 1824; his son, Joseph B. Stockton, Sr., subject’s father, inherited most of the property; late in life, however, he lost most of it by indorsing for his friends.
