John Nicol (1805-1877) was born circa 1805 in Scotland and died 1877 Caversham, Otago, New Zealand of unspecified causes.

Captain John Nicol went to sea at an early age. He sailed on the first steamer to visit China (s.s. Sobraon) and as Captain brought the first steamer to the new colonies of Australia and New Zealand. His later years were spent on the 'Gil Blas' sailing as a mail boat between Australia and around the coast of New Zealand.
