Biography
John Macquarie Antill was born 26 January 1866 in Jarvisfield, Picton, New South Wales, Australia to John Macquarie Antill (1822-1900) and Jessie Hassall Campbell (1834-1917) and died 1 March 1937 Prince Henry Hospital, Redfern, New South Wales, Australia of cancer. He married Agnes Marion Wills-Allen (1879-1936) 24 October 1901 in St. James', Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
John Macquarie “Bull” Antill CB CMG, infamous for his role as the Brigade Major of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade during the charge of the Nek on Gallipoli, but in truth “a courageous soldier, an able leader, a stern disciplinarian and a shrewd judge of men, with a flair for moulding those under his command to his ideal of what a soldier should be.”[i] He was later promoted to Brigadier General and commanded the 3rd Light Horse Brigade in Palestine and the 2nd Infantry Brigade at Ypres in Belgium and retired as a Major General after the war.
