John Logan "Jack" Brown was born on 15 October 1913 at 27 Rochester Street, Belfast, to William Blair Brown and Margaret, née Logan. The family later moved to 45 Haddington Gardens.

He married Annie Mills at Ravenhill Presbyterian Church on 20 March 1940. Their first son, John Logan "Ian" Brown, was born on 27 January 1941. Their second, Stephen Brown, was born on 13 September 1942. A third, Michael Brown, was born in 1944.

Jack's father William died in 1944. sister Ina died of breast cancer in 1945. His brother-in-law, Bob McKibbin, died in 1947 in an accident on board the Reina del Pacifico, a liner in dock on Belfast Lough for a refit after being used as a troop ship during the war.
