In his father's 1761 lease on 47 acres of Kilraughts (Reg. of Deeds Dublin Book 247 deed 158814), it states that John was aged 14. It is written in the History of Westmoreland County that John Borland first sailed to America in 1769 and ended up crossing the ocean five times. He was delayed in coming back to America during the Revolution. His brother Samuel was suppose to have sailed with him on one of these trips. The earliest one can find John settling down in America is in 1785 when he was living in Bedford township, Bedford county, PA, as a single free man. John was found owning 100 acres, 1 horse, 1 still that he paid taxes on in 1786 in Bedford County, PA. By 1790 he moved to Westmoreland County, PA where he owned a farm on the NE corner of present day Penn township near the town of Export which he bought from William Ellison, Jr. for ten schillings an acre. In 1791, John married Margaret Cairns. In 1792 John's name appears in the tax list for Franklin township, Westmoreland county, PA. On 13 Jul 1793 John Borland with his brother James witnessed the will of John Smiley, their nephew, in Westmoreland County, PA, Will Book #1 page 110. On John's farm was erected the first schoolhouse in the area in 1799. In 1811 John was taxed on 400 patent acres, 2 horses, 3 cows. His grave has not been located. He is said to have died in 1830 shortly before his sister did, who was married to Judge Potts of Johnstown. This should have stated that his sister-in-law, Jane Karns, was married to Judge Potts' father. Jane Karns first married Robert Gibson in Westmoreland co., PA. Their son, William, was born 17 Jan 1797. Robert had to go to Kentucky on business where he was thrown by his horse and died when baby William was but six weeks old. Mrs. Gibson then moved to Butler, Pa where seven years later in 1804 she married John Potts.
