John Austin Wharton was born April 1806 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, United States to William Henry Wharton (1768-1816) and Judith Harris (1768-1816) and died 17 December 1838 Houston, Harris County, Texas, United States of unspecified causes.
Both Wharton County, Texas, and its county seat, Wharton, were named for him and his brother William Harris Wharton (1802-1839), who was likewise a statesman of the Republic of Texas.
