John Augustus Ames was born on October 23, 1846 in Tazewell, Illinois. Between May and October 1864, at age 17, he served as a private in the 139th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War.
In 1873 he married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Shaw in Media, Delaware, Pennsylvania.
In 1900, he lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, but moved to the State of Washington in 1901.
In 1908, he filed to the State of Washington for an invalid's pension. On April 3, 1918, he was admitted to the Washington State Soldier's Home in Orting, Washington.
He died on June 24, 1921 in Aberdeen, Washington.
