Joel Ellis was born 7 January 1679 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts to Matthias Ellis (1657-1748) and Mercy Nye (1652-1744) and died 21 June 1763 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. He married Elizabeth Churchill (1687-1753) 6 April 1710 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. He married Jemima Tupper (1704-1771) 27 March 1758 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

Joel Ellis, Sr., was born in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, on Jan. 17, 1679/80, the eldest of nine children of Lt. Matthias Ellis and Mercy Nye.

On Apr. 6, 1710, at Sandwich, 30-year-old Joel married 23-year-old Elizabeth Churchill, the daughter of Sgt. John Churchill and Rebecca Delano. Elizabeth is a distant cousin of Sir Winston Churchill and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Joel and Elizabeth had eight children: Joel Jr., John, Samuel, Matthias, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Charles, Thomas.

Joel was an officer in the Massachusetts Militia. He died in Middleboro, June 21, 1763, at the age of 84 and was buried at Cemetery At The Green.
