Jesse Appleton was born 17 October 1772 in New Ipswich, Hillsborough, New Hampshire to Francis Appleton (1733-1816) and Elizabeth Hubbard (1730-1815) and died 12 November 1819 Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine of unspecified causes. He married Elizabeth Means (1780-1844) 25 April 1800 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

Biography

Jesse Appleton was the second president of Bowdoin College and the father of First Lady Jane Pierce. Connected to the Appleton Family of Boston Brahmin caste status.

After having graduated from Dartmouth College in 1792, Appleton taught at several institutions including Amherst College and then worked at a parish in Hampton, New Hampshire. In the early 19th century, he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from both Dartmouth and Harvard University.

In 1807, he was appointed president of Bowdoin, where he remained until he died of tuberculosis in 1819.
