He married Mary Ann Sternbeck (1874-1949) 1893 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. James Walker a well-known and highly-esteemed resident of Whittingham died suddenly on Saturday, following a collapse while having a cup of tea at his home. He had, however been in failing health for some time and his demise has caused widespread sorrow amongst a large circle of friends. Deceased was born at St. Albans on the M'Donald River, 69 years ago, and with the exception of a few years at Dungog has been engaged in farming pursuits in this district.
He leaves a wife and seven children, as follows: Mrs A. Searl, Hexham; Mrs R. Haggarty, Whittingham; Mrs J. S. Haggarty, Dungog; Miss Walker, Whittingham, and Messrs Herbert, Tweed Heads; Keith, and Owen, Whittingham.
The funeral left at 10 a.m. this morning for the Methodist cemetery, Rev. T. M. Taylor officiating and Messrs Partridge Bros, were in charge of funeral arrangements.
