At the age of sixteen, he professed Faith in Christ and was baptized in the fellowship of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Tennessee by Elder Elijah Mattox.

In 1841, with his family, he moved to Wayne County. In 1853, he assisted in the organization of the first Baptist Church in Wayne County and was a charter member thereof. He was elected and ordained a deacon, which position he held at time of his death.

He was a member of Fairfield Post No. 244 G.A.R (Grand Army of the Republic) which organization conducted the funeral services and attended the same in body. The funeral occurred at the Baptist Church at nine o'clock Monday morning, Reverend R E Burt preaching the sermon. The interment took place at the family cemetery on the old farm about 4 miles northeast of Fairfield.

^ In 1836, he entered the Florida War and served 6 months. In 1850, he went to California where he remained 1 year and 12 days. The government had lost his service record for this war by the time of his death, so in order to procure her widow's pension, his wife had to track down men with whom he had served to swear out affidavits that he had been in their regiment.
