He married Agnes McHattan (c1852-1906) 20 April 1873 in Uralla, New South Wales, Australia. He married Amy Alice Gillies (1886-1960) 3 June 1911 in Canterbury, New South Wales, Australia.

Obituary
Another old and highly respected pioneer of Walcha district, in the person of Mr. James A. McGuffog, of Netherton, passed over the Great Divide, at his home. The deceased, who was a native of Dalbeatie, Scotland, and in his 84th year, came to the State 64 years ago, going to Armidale, where he resided for a time, and afterwards to Surveyor's Creek Station, Walcha Road, which was owned by the late Mr. John Scott. Being of an ambitious disposition, he was not content to remain working for others, so decided to push out for himself, and selected "Netherton" 56 years ago, which property remained in his possession up to the time of his death. Deceased had to put up with many hard ships that fell to the lot of many of the early pioneers, but never flinched from any, and being endowed with a determined nature and foresight, he came out on top. He was twice married, and leaves a family of three sons in Messrs. James A. (Tamworth), Robert B. (Wilson's Creek), Wm. J. (Rose Cottage, Walcha), and Mrs. J. T. Blake (Walcha) by the first issue, and two sons and a widow of the second marriage, together with numerous relatives.
