Mr. James Laing, the well-known international and interstate umpire, died yesterday at Prince Alfred Hospital.

Mr. Laing was for 18 years an officer of the State Relief Department, and latterly held the position of inspector in charge of the St. George district. Prior to joining that branch of the Public Service the deceased was employed in the Taxation Department.

Mr. Laing's death deprives the New South Wales Cricket Association of a very enthusiastic and capable official, whose services were always given, as an amateur umpire, throughout the season in first-grade and interstate matches.
