James Harwood was born circa 1774 in England .

His son James may have immigrated to New York in 1835 at the age of 17.

In 1841 James was with his wife Elizabeth, his son Henry 19, and his daughter Harriet, 9, at St Mary Whitechapel, Middlesex, Emgland. James was recorded as a farmer born outside the County of Middlesex. This occupation has to be incorrect as one could not farm in the middle of London. When his daughter Harriet married in 1854 she showed her father Jame's occupation as merchant cheesemonger.

His daughter Harriet immigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1853 at the age of 21.
