James received his early education in England, before sailing on board the "Egmont" with his family for Lyttelton, arriving on 7 July 1862. His parents purchased land near Ohoka and James completed his education at Flaxton. After the death of his mother, James moved to Ashburton where in 187_ he bought a farm from the Government on Graham's Road Tinwald. He sold out in 1893 and established a large business in Archibald Street. He retained ownership of farms at Tinwald, Winslow, Hinds and Ohoka. He was elected to the Tinwald Town Board, served on the Tinwald School Committee, and was a member of the Loyal Lodge of Oddfellows.
