In 1983, he was elected to Parliament as the MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath and subsequently rose through the ranks of the government to become the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1997-2007) and then the Prime Minister in 2007. He married brand consultant, Sarah Macaulay (1963-) at his home in North Queensferry on the 3rd August 2000. Together they had three children: Jennifer (2001-2002), John (2003-) and James (2006-).
