Obituary

MR. JAMES ELLEM

CASINO. Thursday.—One of the best known identities of the district, Mr. James Ellem, of South Casino, died on Tuesday at the age of 89. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Ellem, of Grafton, and was born at Mangrove Creek, Hawkesbury River. Eighteen years later he journeyed by bullock waggon to Nymboida, via the Tableland, and had some exciting experiences during the trip. He was held up, at one stage, for six weeks by floods. He was for some time engaged hauling timber and merchandise from Grafton to the Tablelands. He came to the Richmond in 1902 and settled on Bruton estate near Casino, later buying a property at Piora and eventually retiring and coming to live at South Casino. He was married at O.B.X. Creek, some 64 years ago to Miss Isabella Mulligan, who pre-deceased him eight years ago. Surviving sons are Messrs. Francis. J., Ronald C., and Clifford A. (Edenville), Roy S. (A.M.C.) and Eric G. (Nimbin). Daughters are Mesdames P. C. Brewer (South Gundurimba). A. E. Murray (Mummulgum), A. McQueen (Fawcett's Plain), G. E. Cole (Parramatta), and Miss Ivy Ellem (South Casino). Two sons were killed in the last war. Mr. Richard Ellem (Kempsey) is a brother and Mrs. McCope (Sydney) a sister. The funeral moved from St. Mark's Church of England yesterday, the services being taken by Rev. O. N. Manny. Pall-bearers were Messrs. Francis, Ronald, Clifford, Roy and Eric Ellem (sons) and Alec Ellem (grandson). The wreaths were carried by Messrs. P. C. Brewer. A. E. Murray and A. McQueen (sons-in-law). A number of town organisations were represented at the church and graveside, including: the executive of Casino Red Cross branch, of which the late Mr. Ellem was a generous supporter.
