Biography

Migration to New England

Conflict note: 19th and 20th Century genealogical researchers differ in as signing the parents of James Bates, born in England in 1621. All seem to agree that he married Ruth Lyford in Hingham, Ma. in 1643 BUT some researchers make him the son of Clement and Anna Bates, as I have noted he re and some make him the brother of Clement Bates. On the ships passenger list (PLANTERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH 1620-1640, by Charles Edward Banks ), a James Bates age 14 arrived in New England in 1635 with the Clement and Anne Bates family. Also arriving in 1635 there was a James Bates a ge 53 and Alice Bates age 52 and family, All of the above were from Lydd, Kent, England. It would appear that the James Bates, son of Clement Bates is the same James Bates that married Ruth Lyford.
