Jacob Croft 1856 Pioneer Company

Jacob Croft (1808-1900) led 63 people in a pioneer company that left 26 Jun 1856 from Ft. Kearney, Nebraska and arrived in Salt Lake City on 11 Oct 1856. Croft and many of the other families originated from Harris County, Texas and across the south. The following year, many of these individuals continued to Southern Utah as part of the Dixie Cotton Mission called by Brigham Young (1801-1877) to settle Washington, Utah.

Marriage and Family

1st Marriage: Amanda Miller

George Croft (1845-1888) and his parents moved to Texas when he was a small boy. His mother and sister were killed in a fall from a horse when he was six years old (08-July-1852).

2nd Marriage : Sabrina Land

It is significant to point out that Sabrina Land Matheny Cropper was baptized into the CJCLDS on 8 October 1852. In 1853 she and her eight children journeyed to the Verdigris River in Cherokee Indian Territory with a caravan of CJCLDS people. She married Jacob Croft (1808-1900), whom she had known earlier (and likely his first wife, Amanda Miller Croft, as well) in approximately January 1854. Jacob Croft joined the CJCLDS on July 10 1855 after his former stepfather-in-law James Cooper was sent back from Utah on a mission to Texas.
