Isaac was the 3rd of 4 children (3 sons and 1 daughter) born of Isaac Ball (1710-1789) and his wife Rachel Howe (1710-1779). Isaac's siblings were: Adonijah (1739-1760), Rachel (b. 1744) and Moses (1748-1820).

Isaac, while residing in Athol, Worcester County, Massachusetts, marched as a Private on the alarm of April 19, 1775 (the Lexington Alarm) in Captain Ichabod Dexter's Company, Colonel Doolittle's Regiment of Massachusetts Militia. After serving 5 days, on April 24, 1775, he enlisted as a Private in Captain Dexter's Company, Colonel Woodbridge's Regiment in which he served at least 3 months and 14 days and probably into October, 1775.

After recording, on April 13, 1778, in Templeton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, their intention to marry, Isaac married, on May 3, 1778, at Athol, Hannah Commins (Cummings) by whom he had at least 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters): Adonijah (b. 1778), Rachel (b. 1782), Hannah (b. 1784), Isaac (1787-1865) and Eunice (1789-1852).
