Holland was a county of the Holy Roman Empire and one of the provinces of the Dutch Republic. In the early years, Holland was called Frisia west of the Vlie or West Frisia. The name Holland became common during the reign of Count Dirk V. After a period of frequent reorganization between 1795 and 1840, Holland was split into the provinces North Holland and South Holland, the Netherlands.
