Obituary

MRS. HEPHZIBAH TRACEY

The death occurred early on Tuesday morning of Mrs. Hephzibah Tracey, of "Wattle Grove," Laggan.

The deceased was 88 years of age and had a lingering illness of several months before her death.

She was noted for her hospitality and leaves behind a memory and an example of one whose chief concern was the helping of others. Born at Binda, Mrs. Tracy lived practically the whole of her life in the home where she died.

Her husband, James Tracey, predeceased her many years ago. She is survived by three sons and four daughters. The sons are James ("Wattle Grove," Laggan), George (Waverley), and Will (Wentworthville). The daughters are Mrs. Joe Baker (Laggan), Mrs. W. A. Toole (Neville), Mrs. P. Waugh (Laggan), and Mrs. J. Gibbons (Burraga).

"Wattle Grove," the late home of the deceased, was known to the residents of the Peelwood and Limerick districts, in the days of the horse and sulky, as half-way house and here a warm welcome always awaited every caller.

The late Mrs. Tracey, in the early days, when the nearest doctor was stationed at Goulburn, was frequently called upon for her assistance in times of sickness by the people of the district. Her services were always readily available and she frequently rode many miles in the night on her missions of mercy.

A very true friend her passing will be mourned by many.

Her reminiscences of the early days and her encounters with the bushrangers were most entertaining.

She knew all the trals and hardships endured by those who pioneered the district.

She was an accomplished horse woman and had ridden to Goulburn and back in one day. She accomplished the trip to Bathurst on one occasion, on horseback, carrying a four-year-old child.

Three daughters, Maria, Mary and Marian, predeceased her.

The funeral from her late residence to the Presbyterian Cemetery, Crookwell, was a large one. The Rev. M. A. Spence, Taralga, officiated at the graveside. He also conducted a service at the residence prior to the burial,
