MILDURA, Friday. — The death occurred today of Mrs. Hattie Sexton Chaffey, widow of the late Mr. William Benjamin Chaffey, who, with his brother, Mr. George Chaffey, founded the Mildura irrigation settlement 63 years ago.
Aged 84 years, she died at the famous Chaffey home Rio Vista, where she spent most of her life.
Born of English parents [not true], Mrs. Chaffey came to Mildura from Hamilton, Ohio, U.S.A., in 1891. She took a keen interest in the early development of Mildura, and was lady of the shire when Mr. W. B. Chaffey was shire president of Mildura, in 1908.
Mrs. Chaffey was the mother of four children—Emily (Mrs. Colin Bowring) , Mr. R. H. Chaffey, Isobel (Mrs. J. Walker, of Mansfield) and George Frederick, who predeceased her.
The funeral will leave Rio Vista at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday for Mildura cemetery.
