After the death of her father Thomas Hall,in 1821, Sarah Hall [Harriets mother], placed three of her children in the Female Orphanage at Parramatta. Sarah was just over seven months pregnant [with her daughter Martha], when she placed Susannah [Elizabeth], Sophia, and Harriet in the Parramatta Girls Orphan School on the 21.06.1821. Sarah placed the children in the Orphanage under the advice of Rev. William Cowper who was a senior clergy in the colony at the time.
