Obituary

Harriet Bateman Wight, widow of the late Lyman Wight of this city, died at the home of her son Thaddeus in Call's Fort last Saturday night of old age. She was a little over 76 years old, in fact, was 76 on the 4th of last November. She has been in very poor health for several years past and welcomed death as a release from her helplessness. Notwithstanding her willingness to go there was the natural pain of having to part with her, the loving mother who had been so faithful through all these many years fraught with trials and hardships of every description.

"Aunt Harriet", as she was called, was born November 4th 1830, in Sheffield, England, and immigrated to America with her parents about 1810. On May 7th, 1848, she became the wife of Lyman Wight, the ceremony being performed at Green Bay, Iowa, by the late Bishop Alfred Cordon, and from this union thirteen children were born. Only four of them survive her and they were present at the funeral. They are Thadeus, Mary, Maggie, and Alma. She was one of the pioneers of this city, having come here in the early fifties and has lived here ever since. She died as she had lived, a faithful Latter-Day Saint, and was greatly loved and respected by everyone who knew her. Peace to her ashes, and may she come forth in the first resurrection crowned with the glories of eternal life.

Funeral services were held in the 3rd ward meeting house Tuesday afternoon where a goodly representation of friends gathered to pay their last respects. Counselor David P. Burt presided and the singing was furnished by members of the choir.

Elders Nels Madsen opened the meeting by prayer and Elder James Olsen dismissed. The speakers were Elders James Pett, Jacob Jensen, Bishop Thomas H. Blackburn, Bishop Thomas Yates, Bishop Brigham Wright, Patriarch William L. Watkins, Presidents Olen N. Stahl and W.C. Horsley."
