The General Register Office (GRO) is that part of the governmentWp globe tiny of the United KingdomWp globe tiny that deals with the civil registrationWp globe tiny of birthsWp globe tiny, marriageWp globe tinys, Civil PartnershipWp globe tinys and deathWp globe tinys in England and WalesWp globe tiny. It was founded in 1836Wp globe tiny, created by an ActWp globe tiny of the Parliament of the United KingdomWp globe tiny (6 & 7 Will. 4 C A P. LXXXVI), and civil registration commenced in 1837Wp globe tiny. Its head is the Registrar GeneralWp globe tiny. The most distinguished person associated with the Office in the nineteenth century, although never its head, was William FarrWp globe tiny.

In 1972Wp globe tiny, the GRO became part of the newly created Office of Population Censuses and SurveysWp globe tiny (OPCS), with the Registrar General in overall charge. Then in 1996Wp globe tiny, the OPCS and therefore the GRO became part of the newly created Office for National StatisticsWp globe tiny, and the office of Registrar General was merged with that of Head of the Government Statistical ServiceWp globe tiny.

There are equivalent offices for ScotlandWp globe tiny and Northern IrelandWp globe tiny. The responsibility of all three general register offices covers the registration of births, marriages, civil partnerships and deaths, and also that of stillbirthWp globe tinys and adoptionWp globe tinys.

The General Register Office also supply copies of birthWp globe tiny, marriageWp globe tiny, civil partnershipWp globe tiny certificates and death certificateWp globe tinys. These copies may be obtained either online, via the Family Records CentreWp globe tiny or from a local register officeWp globe tiny.
