Capt. Lion Gardiner

The Gardiner family was the first family in what would become known as New York state, on Gardiner's Island, after Lion Gardiner became the first European to settle the Colony. He was also granted the titled Lord of Manor of Gardiner Island, which is the biggest privately owned island in America today.

Early Life[]

Nothing is known of Lion Gardiner's youth expect that he was born in England and probably a member of the English gentry; he however was a member of Parliment. The first part of his early life that we know of when he volunteered to help maintain the republic of Holland, Netherlands, because England was a great ally of Holland. Durin his time in Holland is was a master egineer for the William I, Prince of Orange. While he was fighting in Holland, because of his master skills of egnieering, the Lords and Gentlement of Egland asked him to go to New England to help construct and fortify the forts. After signing a contract with the Massachusetts Company after agreeing that he would anually be paid 100, Gardiner and his family embarked for New England from London on 10 July 1635 on the ship Batcheler; he was 36 years old.

The first settlement in what would become New York state was founded in East Hampton by Lion Gardiner who was a captain in the army of the William I, Prince of Orange.
